The Big Picture - Jersey City Townhouse

At last Domingo Comms is excited to share some final images from a two month long ‘The Big Picture’ design project. Working closely with clients, the brief for this particular space asked for Domingo Comms to help with artwork placement from their already exisiting collection and guidance on interior design, moving a few key pieces of furniture, consulting on new finds, and advising on staple pieces like the rug and Eames chairs.

Sometimes we just need an extra pair of eyes! I love the example of this little corner which was one of the first changes we made back in January. Originally this gorgeous chair was set on the other side of the living room but it felt a little out on its own and better suited to this sun drenched corner. We moved it over near the client’s work desk, set some artwork and lighting to create a moment, and suddenly a whole new area of the space was born.

The exciting challenges that were encountered came when it was time to think about placing this extensive collection of tribal masks in a new location, as they were originally over the sofa. What I love about these masks is that each one has an interesting story with the client having traveled all over the world, bringing back special pieces along her journey. Some were even found in New York City where she grew up! The idea here was to create almost like an installation with the masks themselves, giving them their own space in the room, drawing attention to the high cielings and making space for more artworks to be brought in.

One of my favorite outcomes in the home design came from curating the artwork in the entryway gallery wall. It was clear from the start of our work that many of the pieces from the collection were black and white. We thought it would be ideal for a black and white gallery wall as there was enough to fill the whole space, while still leaving room to eventually grow. The combination of having on either side of these two large walls, a striking contrast between a bright colorful gallery wall which also includes an art TV in the living room, with the black and white artworks drawing you in further and inviting you inside the home. The mix of textures and mediums of work here is also captivating and makes for instant conversation.

There are so many aspects of this home that I was drawn to and in true Domingo fashion, it always comes down to the story. The client had a brilliant way of mixing special memories like gifts from their wedding, nods to favorite musicians (see David Bowie front and center in the B&W gallery wall), with newly aqcuired artworks by tattoo artists they love, souvenirs from travel and some awesome Etsy finds. It all tells the story of a young couple in their first home who have a sensibility for design and are not scared to shy away from color and making a bold statement. It was such a pleasure to work on this townhouse!
